Commission Appeals Jail Closure

Choctaw County officials are appealing an order by the state of Alabama to close the local jail.

The state fire marshal's office ordered the closure, citing a number of violations at the jail.

Choctaw County commissioners have decided to file a formal appeal of the closure in Choctaw County Circuit Court.

As it stands, commissioners say it could cost around $ 1 million to fix all the violations cited by the state.

Reading the previous posted comments makes you wonder what in the world is going on in my home town! I pray that every wicked and corrupt law enforced employee will be convicted by the power of ALMIGHTY GOD and realize that there is a God that sees all and knows all and HE have his eyes on the city of Butler and the County of Choctaw. You may get away but you want get by. One day you will stand before a just GOD who will reward you for all the evil and wrong you have allowed to corrupt the cities and communities in the Choctaw County. It's time for a CHANGE!!!! Stop using the State's money for your own prosperity! A jail is for those that break the law. From the previous comments is seem as though drugs are your biggest issue, but if the officials are the main streamline for the drugs in the city the who are the real criminals? Come on Choctaw County open your eyes. Where are the prayer warriors in the city? Churches, Christians God fearing people it's time to PRAY!!!!!!!

This jail should be shut down, I have pictures to prove what the inside of this jail looks like. I agree criminals should not live at The Holiday Inn but sanitary is another thing. If your were a friend of Lovette you got special priveleges and could have all the drugs you wanted in that jail. He ran a crroked county, thank you Jesus he is out. He has planted and set more people up than you can imagine. He broke the law himself. Money (large sums) came up missing out of the property room on more than one occasion, he refused to allow people to bond out of jail even though there was a bond set, he allowed his children to drive around in seized vehicles that did not belong to him, he searched peoples homes and vehicles without a search warrant and most of all altered records. He is corrupt and the latest rumor is that Sheriff Lovette is being charged with embezellment which he should be and a Audit is being done of the Sheriff's office. Lock him up!!!

@Charlie, several of the inmates that were out on work release on Butlerfest night were also drinking. But as for the vulgar things that were said, that has happened for years there, it's not the sheriff's fault on that, there are other police officers that work for the county, the ones working the jail or around it could have stepped up and stopped it. I feel no sympathy for people in jail, I think jail should be terrible, that way it would convince them it is NOT a place they want to go back to and might convince them to stay OUT of TROUBLE!

They need to build a new jail outside of the city of Butler where there is no one around. Put them out in the woods so all they can holler at is the wild animals. Put gards at the entrance who will stop all the drugs and free access to the inmates. Start treating the criminals like criminals.

There have been many problems over the years at our jail. Too many trustees that walk the roads, go to stores, etc. Money, however, is a big issue in our county. Why do we pay our Commissioners more than the commissioners in Baldwin County? Why are so many of the roads only getting a handful of gravel when it is election time? We need to completely clean house in Butler and let someone else accomplish what the handful of good ol' boys neglected for years to do.

I THINK THAT THE JAIL SHOULD HAVE CLOSED YEARS AGO. ANY BODY THAT KNOWS HOW THINGS ARE RUN IN THE BUTLER JAIL THEY WOULDNT CARE IF THEY WENT TO JAIL OR NOT BECAUSE THE INMATES GET TO DO WHATEVER THEY WANT AND WHEN THEY WANT TO, NOT TO MENTION WHEN THINGS LIKE BUTLER FEST GO ON THE INMATES STAND OUT BY THE FENCE AND YELL VULGAR THINGS WHETHER ITS KIDS OR ADULTS. I BLAME THE SHERIFF, OBVIOUSLY HE DIDNT CARE ABOUT THE CITIZENS OF CHOCTAW COUNTY OR IT WOULDNT HAVE HAPPENED BUT THAT IS ALSO WHY THE SHERIFF GOT VOTED OUT OF OFFICE. I THINK THAT ONCE WE GET A NEW FACE (SHERIFF) THE CITIZENS OF CHOCTAW COUNTY WILL SEE A BIG DIFFERENCE IN HOW THINGS ARE DONE.
