York, Alabama State Department of Public Health officials say a foodborne illness outbreak has sickened at least 36 people who ate at a funeral in western Alabama.
Department spokeswoman Dr. Mary McIntrye says more than 100 people are said to have attended a funeral July 6 at Eastern Star Baptist Church in York.
McIntyre says at least 30 people have been hospitalized in serious condition, and preliminary tests from the Alabama Bureau of Clinical Laboratories have come back positive for salmonella.
Officials say the investigation into the foodborne illness outbreak involves people who have been hospitalized in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri and Oklahoma.
McIntyre says an investigation was launched after 25 people were admitted to emergency rooms July 6 and 7 with fevers, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting.
