Way off of County Road 2 in the Morningstar community sits the Morningstar Youth Community Center. That is where Sumter County Sheriff Tyrone Clark says 31-year old Detrick Bell of York was shot to death.
"What we had happen was we had a function there at the community center," Sheriff Clark explains. "It got out of hand, out of control, however you may want to call it. Where an alterication broke out between some individuals. Where it left one person dead."
Sheriff Clark tells Newscenter 11 that multiple eyewitnesses have identified the shooter as Sherman Porter of New Orleans. He says at this time, it appears the motive of the shooting is drug-related.
Authorities are actively searching for Porter now, but so far have not located him. Clark says Porter and Bell did not know each other prior to the shooting.
"No, I don't think so," Clark says. "Because from information that we've gathered, it's like an introductory to everybody in and around the shooting area, introducing Mr. Sherman Porter."
Clarke says in recent days, there have been random shots fired at homes in the Morningstar community, which he says he believes are connected to Saturday night's deadly shooting. He tells us he's hoping the public will help in solving this case as well.
