NFL Player Works with Local Habitat

New York Giants cornerback Brian Witherspoon and several other volunteers helped out with a Habitat for Humanity project in meridian on Saturday afternoon.

Witherspoon is from Butler, Alabama and says it is good to be back in the area and lending a helping hand.

"I don't want anyone saying that just because I'm a professional athlete, you know, I'm not around," he says. "I want to come back and help the community. I think that's very important. You should always try and give back to your community. Always try to come through if you can, when you can. That's why I'm here today."

Witherspoon says the work he did on Saturday is actually easier than the game of football.

Get on the line across from me and tell me football easy!!! No matter what blacks are doing whether it's playing sports and making a honest living or selling drugs WE will always be criticized. Had it been a white athlete he would have been praised.

Of course the work he did was easier than football. He's really not that great at all, so obviously he's doing something wrong. However, I will give him credit for coming out and giving back to the community.

Wonder why anyone would have anything negative to say about someone giving back??????? He didn't have to spend his day doing this, but he did...hope he continues to give back to the community despite negativity. Keep up the good work!!!

These smug, arrogant, so-called athletes make me sick! The work he did was easier than the work he does in the NFL, give me a break! Anyone can run up and down a field or a court with a ball! It takes a real man to defend his country and his community! I mean Soldiers and Police Officers respectfully!
