Salvation Army Leadership Change

Whenever we see or hear Salvation Army, many of us probably think immediately of the kettle campaign that is held throughout the holiday season.

In actuality, The Salvation Army is more than that. The Meridian office has a store through which most of its funds are raised, and also a men's shelter. The Salvation Army is a church carrying out a Christian ministry.

"The mission of The Salvation Army is to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination," said Maj. Steve Welch. "So, that's what all these other practical ministries are all about; it's about sharing God's love through those practical ways."

Because The Salvation Army is a church, its leaders do move around to serve wherever they are needed the most.

The Welches have been summoned to Selma, Ala., where they will serve the local Salvation Army there. In asking about the strengths and obstacles they faced here in Meridian, money is something always in need.

"I don't think there's ever enough money, you know, I mean, to do everything you need to do," said Maj. Mary Welch. "There's always something else that needs to be done, so money's always an issue."

On the other hand, the Welches say lack of money led others to help however they could.

"Most of us don't have that deep of pockets," said Mary Welch. "There might be a few but most people don't. And so when people can help through other ways, I think that that makes a big difference."

The Welches' final meeting in Meridian will be June 17 at 11 a.m. at the Salvation Army chapel.

Incoming Salvation Army leaders, Walter "Ed" and Vicki Strong, of Brevard County, Fla., will take over June 24. Their welcome meeting is set for June 24 at 11 a.m.
