A south Alabama sheriff is doing well after being shot in the arm during a standoff in Flomaton.

The Mobile Press-Register reported Saturday that the Escambia County Sheriff's Office says Sheriff Grover Smith came through surgery successfully and is expected to be released Sunday.

Trooper Kevin Cook said in an email Friday that Smith was wounded that morning while conducting official business at the residence of 62-year-old James Arrington of Flomaton. The sheriff's office says Smith was attempting to serve a mental commitment pickup order.

The state police said that Arrington, after shooting Smith, committed suicide. Smith was being treated Saturday at a Mobile hospital.
