Sumter County Sheriff Tyrone Clarke says it resulted from an argument among relatives over a set of car keys.
One man was killed, and the alleged gunman is still hospitalized at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.
Sheriff Clarke says his condition has been upgraded to stable.
Investigators expect to question the suspect within the next two days.
