The Alabama Department of Public Safety reported Monday that its trooper force worked 525 traffic fatalities in 2010.
Traffic fatalities investigated by state troopers peaked at 828 in 2006, then declined to 766 in 2007, 635 in 2008 and 541 in 2009.
The acting director of public safety, Col. F.A. Bingham, says safety campaigns that increased trooper presence on the highways contributed to the reduction.
The latest campaign was called Operation Safe Holidays and it ran from Dec. 10 to Jan. 2.
Troopers gave out more than 14,000 speeding citations during the campaign and made 492 arrests for driving under the influence.
