Municipal elections are a lot of work for the city clerk's office. It only handles general elections every four years.

So at this time, city employees are just getting back into the swing of preparing for an election.

Both the Democrat and Republican parties will be putting together executive committees that will oversee the primary election and a run-off, if one is needed. Cities run the general election.

Republican Municipal Committee secretary John Watts says the group will begin working next week.

The Democrat Committee will be selected Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 6 p.m. during a meeting in the city council chambers of the Meridian police station, according to party chair Melba Clark.

"One thing in the recently annexed areas, those voters have to be identified and placed in the rolls to be able to vote in the election," said city clerk Ed Skipper.

The qualification deadline for candidates is Mar. 6. The primary is May 5 and the general election is scheduled for June 2.
