Bill Marcy was the first to make known his intentions to run for mayor of Meridian in 2009. The Republican did that in October 2008.

Other candidates, both Republican and Democrat, have since made their announcements to run.

Marcy said Wednesday he welcomes the competition. So far, he and Cheri Barry are the only GOP candidates.

The former Chicago police officer and former congressional candidate said Barry will bring a lot to the campaign.

Marcy described how he plans to run his campaign for mayor.

"We are going to put enough dollars into it, but we're going to do it the same as with the city's money, very conservatively," said Marcy.

Marcy said he looks forward to debating the issues with all the candidates for mayor.

Mr. Marcy was elected to represent Lauderdale County Republicans at the State and National Conventions, but according to this article in the Meridian Star dated June 18, 2008 he doesn't claim them... Bill Marcy, a Meridian resident who recently ran in the 3rd District Republican Congressional primary, said during comments to the council that he is preparing to run for mayor in 2009. If he indeed runs, he said, he will run as a "conservative independent."

Mr. Marcy is a wonderfully eloquent and smart man, and he represented Meridian well in the race for Chip's seat.
