Judge Puts Melton Back on Ballot

A judge has ordered a Democratic committee to put Jackson Mayor Frank Melton's name back on the May 5 party primary ballot.

The mayor had challenged the decision by the Jackson Democratic Municipal Executive Committee. The committee had declared Melton didn't file homestead exemption in Mississippi so he couldn't run for re-election.

In a hearing Wednesday, Melton argued he had lived in Jackson since 1984 and provided a judge with utility bills, voter registration and other documents to support the claim.

Circuit Judge Billy Joe Landrum of Jones County Thursday ruled Melton had proved he lived in Jackson and would be placed on the ballot.
