Meridian's Municipal Election Commission met Friday to consider the petitions of independent candidates for office.
Tavio Rand is running for city council Ward 2 as an independent. Walter Patton is seeking the Ward 5 seat.
Independents must have the required number of qualified electors to sign their petitions in order to be on the general election ballot.
"If there are questions and there have been questions raised, the candidates, the commission will meet again on Friday April 17 in order to provide the candidates and signatories to petitions submitted by the candidates opportunity to present evidence to the commission," said city attorney Bill Hammack.
Some signatures have apparently been questioned. It's up to the commission to determine if the petitions contain the required number of valid electors.
