Runoffs Slated in Philadelphia, Newton Mayor's Races

There will be runoffs in the mayor's races in Philadelphia and Newton.

Incumbent Democrat Rayburn Waddell of Philadelphia will be in a runoff May 19 with challenger, James Young. Waddell won 38% of the vote Tuesday; Young had 37%. Kathy Moore took 25% of the vote. The winner of the runoff will serve the next term as mayor, since there are no independents or a Republican in the race.

David Carr led a field of three in the Democratic Primary Tuesday in Newton, with 40% of the vote. He will meet incumbent Mayor Michael Pickens, who had 31%, in the runoff in two weeks. Terry Pruitt got 28% of the vote. the winner of the runoff will face independent candidate Robert A. Moore, Jr., in the June 2 general election.
