After several months of campaigning, the general election is finally set for the Meridian mayor's race.

Percy Bland won the Democratic nomination convincingly Tuesday with 61% of the vote in a 4-person field.

With the primary behind him, Bland says his campaign is moving forward with more momentum than ever.

"It means that our camp is big," said Bland. "We have independents, Republicans and moderates coming into our tent and they are coming because they hear our message of change and unity. And they want to be part of a new Meridian and we want to have a new Meridian for them."

Bland admits he has a challenging race ahead of him. Republican Cheri Barry also has large support, and as of April 28, had almost double the money. Barry had raised nearly $62,000 to Bland's roughly $35,000.

"They have some very deep pockets and the thing is we just have to keep talking to the people and fight," said Bland.

However, it appears Bland's large showing Tuesday reminded his supporters of the need to catch up with Barry's fundraising. Supporters immediately began writing out checks to push Bland into the difficult weeks ahead.

Even Bland said he was surprised that he did not have a runoff. He said that will allow him to use his resources and time to better prepare for the general election.

"I think this will be a very clean, smooth race," said Barry. "I think we both have our issues. We both have our agendas. I think we both want to see the best Meridian, Mississippi," said Barry. "I just happen to be the most experienced candidate and bring a lot of leadership to the table."
