The special election to fill the vacant House of Representatives District 82 seat is Tuesday.
Five men are running for the position that was vacated by the death of state Rep. Charles Young.
Special elections don't ordinarily draw a large turnout. But Lauderdale County election officials say they are hopeful voters will have a strong showing Tuesday.
"We have over 10,000 voters that are eligible to vote in this election," said Circuit Clerk Donna Jill Johnson. "We have 12 precincts that will be open, all inside the city. "
Poll watchers from the Mississippi Secretary of State's Office are expected to be in Meridian Tuesday to observe the voting process.
