Some Early Voting Problems Surface

Voters who chose the Democratic primary at the Causeyville precinct in Lauderdale County early Tuesday morning were not able to cast their votes, due to an error with the electronic touch-screen voting machines.

Democratic executive committee chairwoman, Melba Clark, said the issue was quickly corrected.

"It was just a matter, first of all, the young lady who was the R and R was not familiar with the area and she had some trouble finding Causeyville," said Clark, "and once she found it the she was very apologetic and she attempted to have her voters use the card. But it had not been programmed properly so we called the correct people and they said vote paper ballots until we can get someone out there to correct it."

Paper ballots were on standby in case of a problem like this. A programmer later arrived and corrected the encoders and voters were able to cast their Democratic votes electronically.

"You know, Murphy's Law, if something can go wrong it will. Things went wrong for us this morning," Clark said.

Clark said no problems should arise, and those who were unable to vote earlier were asked to return later in the day.

Other areas had problems. Clarke and Kemper counties were among those that experienced early problems with ballots due to unintentional errors by poll workers. Republican voters had to leave some Hinds County precincts when workers failed to arrive and two dozen precincts did not have Republican ballots when the polls opened. In Rankin County, voting machines had incorrect information loaded onto the electronic ballots and voters had to use paper ballots. In Marion County, election officials say hot, humid weather caused some voting machine paper jams in at least one-third of the 23 precincts.
