Stage Nearly Set for November

The field of candidates is mostly set for Mississippi's general election.

In Tuesday's elections, voters gave party nominations to Republican Gov. Haley Barbour and Democrat John Arthur Eaves, Jr.

State Auditor Phil Bryant defeated state Sen. Charlie Ross for the GOP nomination for lieutenant governor. Democrat Jamie Franks was unopposed.

Agriculture Commissioner Lester Spell survived a Republican primary challenge from Max Phillips and will face Democrat Rickey Cole in November.

Republican Delbert Hosemann will face former legislator and Democrat Rob Smith in the November election for secretary of state.

Todd Brand of Bailey, in Lauderdale County, and Mike Sumrall of Mount Olive will be in a runoff for the Democratic nomination for state auditor. Republican Stacey Pickering of Laurel was unopposed.

The runoff is Aug. 28.
