Anderson to Oversee Democratic Elections in Noxubee County

The federal government and black political leaders in Noxubee County have agreed that former state Supreme Court Justice Reuben Anderson should be appointed to oversee local Democratic Party elections there.

U.S. District Judge Tom Lee is expected to decide by Tuesday on the remedies he will impose to satisfy his June 29 opinion.

In it, Lee ruled that Noxubee County Democratic Executive Committee chairman Ike Brown and black political leaders in the majority-black county violated the 1965 Voting Rights Act by discriminating against white voters.

The U.S. Department of Justice brought the lawsuit, the first of its kind in the country to come to trial.

The government also said Brown violated a court order by personally being involved in the preparation and distribution of absentee ballots for the Aug. 7 primary, even after Lee's ruling in June.
