With runoff elections set for Tuesday, the deadline to vote absentee hits Saturday.

Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann has expressed some concern over the percentage of absentee votes in some counties during the August 2nd primary.

In Mississippi, you have to have a legal reason to vote prior to election day, and when you come into your circuit clerk's office, you have to sign on the dotted line, legally confirming that you have a legitimate reason to vote early.

"You're swearing on this affidavit that you are telling the truth," says Lauderdale County Circuit Clerk Donna Jill Johnson, "and if you're not, it states that this is under penalty [of law]."

Absentee turnout was actually below average in Lauderdale County for the August 2nd primary. Johnson says there are rules in place to try and deter absentee fraud.

"[Voters mailing in ballots] have to make a written request to us," said Johnson. "We don't accept call ins. There has to be a paper trail."

Circuit clerk's offices will be open until noon Saturday for absentee voting.
