Absentees Indicate Higher Interest in Nov. 2 Election

Election officials say they expect the number of people voting by absentee ballot to continue to increase because of above-average interest in the mid-term election.

Workers are also busy preparing the machines that will be used for next week's voting. This will continue for at least the next two to three days.

Despite the fact that there is only one contested race in Lauderdale County, election officials say the interest being expressed by people about voting at the polls, or about voting absentee, continues to rise.

"Well, it's higher than what we had in the primary," said Circuit Clerk Donna Jill Johnson. "I think the national media keeping the 'Get the Vote Out' campaign has got people remembering to come vote. So, it has been steady."

Designed to accommodate people who know they will not be able to go to the polls on election day, Johnson says for the past three weeks residents have filed into her office to vote absentee. The opportunity to do that continues through Friday, during regular business hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.

"We ask people if they've got a reason, please come in now. Don't wait until the last minute," Johnson said.

County election commissioners are also not wasting time in getting prepared. They are checking election cards and last minute paperwork, and they say most poll workers have already completed training.

"Three days of it, six classes," said election commissioner, Awana Simmons. "There are a few that will have a makeup class Wednesday. Everything has been going fine. This week we'll be setting up the machines and getting the machines out later on in the week to the precincts. So, we're ready and we're working hard."
