Abortion opponents in the Alabama Legislature are not being deterred by the defeat of a constitutional amendment in Mississippi that said life begins at fertilization.
Republican Sen. Phil Williams of Rainbow City has already
filed Alabama legislation for the session starting in February.
Williams' bill provides that the word 'persons' in Alabama law
shall include anyone from the moment of fertilization and
implantation in the womb.
Williams got an identical bill through the Senate during the
2011 session, but it died in the House. Williams says his bill is viable for the 2012 session.
The group behind the Mississippi proposal, Personhood USA, says including implantation weakens the bill. But Williams says some legislators wanted that language to
make sure the legislation would not hinder in vitro fertilization.
