Dozens of Cities Miss Certification Deadline
Posted: 06/14/2013 - Mississippi's chief elections officer says numerous municipalities failed to certify their recent election results by the legal deadline.
Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour said he struggled himself in making a decision on the Personhood Initiative. He said he voted for the amendment, ultimately, because he is pro-life. But Barbour said he was not surprised it was defeated.
"There are just tens of thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands of pro-life people in Mississippi that were totally uncomfortable with it," said Barbour. "Wasn't done the right way. This was some people from Colorado, who couldn't pass it in Colorado and they brought it to Mississippi because we're such a pro-life state."
Barbour said supporters should have brought the issue to the state legislature, where flaws in the wording could have been corrected.
The measure was defeated, with about 58% of the turnout voting 'No'.
