Northeast Middle School principal, Billy Burnham, announced that he is running for the position against the incumbent, Randy Hodges.
Burnham made his announcement outside the courthouse before going inside to qualify.
Burnham has been principal at several county schools. He says his track record shows that he's ready for the step up.
"Being superintendent of education is something that I've been thinking about for a long time," said Burnham. "Lauderdale County schools are good. We do some things very good. We just want to move to great. And I'm confident that I can be a person that can help facilitate that growth."
Hodges was re-elected superintendent four years ago, after several years out of the position. He qualified to run again for the post Monday.
Both Burnham and Hodges qualified as Republicans.
