Governor Sets Hattiesburg Election Date

Jackson, Miss. Gov. Phil Bryant has set the date for a new mayoral election in Hattiesburg. It will be held Sept. 24.

The governor issued a Writ of Election at the request of Special Circuit Judge William F. Coleman, who vacated the original election results. Coleman ruled that the will of the voters could not be determined.

Independent candidate Dave Ware, who trailed in the original reported totals by 37 votes, went to court to challenge incumbent Democrat, Mayor Johnny DuPree.
Ware had raised objections over how absentee ballots were handled.

All previously qualified candidates will appear on the ballot for the election unless a candidate formally withdraws from the election.
