Meridian, Mississippi Two candidates running for Meridian City Council are sharing their plans for dealing with the city's crime problem.
Randy Hammon is running as a Republican in Ward Five after defeating incumbent Bobby Smith in the primary election. John C. Harris is running as a Democrat and has served on the council before. The candidates have differing viewpoints when it comes to dealing with the ongoing issue.
"You have to update them with harsher penalties for first time offenders," Hammon says. "Rather than give the warning, warning, warning like a lot of people do. Without that happening, you know human behavior, is what it is."
"It's all about making sure those rules and regulations are carried out," Harris says. "Stiffer penalties is not going to deter crimes. Only thing you going to do is perpetrate more crime."
Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
