Lawsuit Over Long Lines Withdrawn

There was controversy during Thursday's elections in Lauderdale County, long lines and complaints of not enough voting machines.

One example was the line at MSU Meridian Tuesday evening. When polls closed at 7:00, the door had to be closed. Those already in line were allowed to vote.

A lawsuit complaint was quickly faxed by a firm in Jackson to the Lauderdale County Circuit Clerk's Office, hoping to get more voting machines and longer hours at MSU Meridian and the Frank Cochran Center.

That suit has since been withdrawn, according to Casandra Sloan, who was listed as a plaintiff and is a member of the Lauderdale County Democratic Party.

"There's no law that says you can't be required to stand in line to vote," said Bill ready, attorney for the Lauderdale County Election Commission. "You have a duty to vote; you should have to stand in line. I hated standing in line in the military but you had to do those things."

County election officials have a formula for determining how many voting machines go to each precinct, and once those machines are put in place, more cannot be added because each voting machine has go through a lengthy set up process.

"We had an overwhelming turnout yesterday which we are very thankful for," said Election Commission chair, Awana Simmons. "We will recalculate how many registered voters we had there at each precinct and then determine how many machines need to be sent out that way."

It's that formula that placed two machines each at the precincts that saw such long lines and lots of frustrated citizens Tuesday.

"I feel like there will be more machines going out to MSU and Frank Cochran in the next election," said Simmons.

Because of a late change made to absentee ballots by the secretary of state, absentee counts have been slow being completed. She said she hopes work on certifying results can begin Thursday.
