After Tuesday's election, the GOP is already claiming a win.

The major battle was over control of the house and the speaker position, which has historically been controlled by democrats.

Going into the general election, republicans only needed to pick up eight seats in gain a majority, while maintaining their in the senate.

Democratic leaders say it's too early for a celebration.

"We still don't know who has the majority in the house," says state democratic leader Rickey Cole, "we won't know until all of the votes are counted and the elections are certified."

Republican party chairman Arnie Hederman released a statement Wednesday saying: "While some races have yet to be called, the outstanding ballots cannot change the fact that republicans will hold a majority of seats in the house."

A total republican majority of the legislature has not happened since the 1870s.
