Officials say early voting is light in Mississippi's Democratic and Republican primary runoffs. Precincts are open Tuesday until 7 p.m. Most nominees were decided three weeks ago.

Each party has one statewide race on Tuesday's ballot. Democrats are choosing a nominee for governor. Republicans are choosing one for treasurer.

Both parties have runoffs for several legislative and county
races. Winners advance to the Nov. 8 general election.

Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree and Clarksdale attorney and
developer Bill Luckett are in the Democratic runoff for governor.
The winner faces Republican Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant of Brandon, and others, in November.

State Personnel Board director Lynn Fitch of Madison and state
Sen. Lee Yancey of Brandon are in the Republican runoff for
treasurer. The winner faces Ocean Springs Mayor Connie Moran.

There are also runoffs for local offices in numerous Mississippi counties.

The voting is light because we aren't allowed to vote! Apparently this election was planned in 30 minutes and the precincts weren't able to get the equipment they needed in time to accomodate the voters. When I arrived at my precinct this morning I was not allowed to vote because they "had the wrong card for the machine". I was also told that numerous persons before me had been turned away. How rediculous! It is hard enough to get people to vote in a runnoff election; can the county officials at leaste make sure the polling stations are properly equipped to accept voters. What an embarrassment!
