Reaction from District 5 About Runoff Results

Lauderdale County teacher Kyle Rutledge won decisively in the runoff with longtime incumbent Ray Boswell. A Democrat, Daniel Cook, is withdrawing from the race, so Rutledge has no opposition in the general election.

"It's just great," said Rutledge. "I mean, I was looking forward to running in November, but it's a lot easier with him withdrawing. He (Cook) called me last night about eleven o'clock and told me he was pleased with me being the supervisor and he decided to withdraw."

Newscenter 11 talked with several supporters of Rutledge on Wednesday. They told us they are pleased, too.

"I think that the person that was in office last, that he didn't do a good job with the community," said District 5 Taylor Hinton. "And I think Rutledge would do a better job."

"Less bad publicity," said Dacie Shelby of why she supported Rutledge. "We might can get some roads out of this."

Shelby also says many of her neighbors are Boswell supporters and that they are very upset by how the race ended. But it's supporters like Shelby and Hinton that Rutledge credits for his victory.

"I just want to thank all the voters that got behind me and all the supporters," Rutledge said. "It just means so much to me. It's very humbling."

But as for those that opted to vote for Boswell instead of Rutledge...

"To his supporters, you know, I'm going to be your supervisor too," said Rutledge. "It doesn't matter who you supported. I'm going to be your supervisor. I'll work just as hard for you as the people who supported me."

And Rutledge says he plans to spend the next few months teaching and coaching. He will be sworn into office Jan. 2.

Newscenter 11 made repeated attempts to reach Boswell for comment, but was unsuccessful.
