Runoff Likely But Vote Tabulations Not Finalized

There will apparently be a runoff in the race for chief of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians.

Choctaw voters came out in large numbers Tuesday to vote in tribal elections.

The race for tribal chief will come down to two people, the incumbent, Miko Beasley Denson, and challenger Phyllis Anderson.

They were the top two vote getters among nine candidates running for the job.

Denson led voting with 1,598 votes. Anderson was second with 872 votes.

There will be a recount of the ballots for chief Friday. No results are official until all the votes are tabulated.

The run-off election was initially set for Monday, July 11, but tribal officials said Thursday by e-mail that the date for the runoff will be changed.
