The Rev. Sam Thompson, pastor of 31st Avenue Missionary Baptist Church, made a formal announcement Friday that he's seeking the District 83 House seat.
Thompson said he decided to run because he wants the district and the state to move in a positive direction. Thompson outlined some of his concerns.
"Adequate education. People have to buy homes. The gas is expensive now; it's going up. And the people need a voice,' said Thompson. "They need someone to speak for them and to be their eyes and their ears as we move forward in this state."
Thompson is running as an independent. That means District 83 voters won't see his name on the ballot until the general election Nov. 8. The seat is currently held by Republican Greg Snowden.
