Merry Meridian: "An Old Fashioned Christmas"

"An Old Fashioned Christmas." That's the theme for the fourth annual Merry Meridian holiday celebration.

The Meridian Downtown Association announced the plans, saying this year promises to be one of the best yet.

"It draws people to downtown. It tells people in Meridian what downtown has to offer. I've said this in the past, people pick at me, but we want people to stay here. We don't want you to go outside of Meridian to look for something to do during the holidays. We have it right here," said event chair Stacy Davis. "That's the reason why we want to make sure everybody outside Mississippi and Alabama knows about this."

This year's Merry Meridian will feature several performances including:
"A Christmas Carol" at Meridian Little Theatre, featuring Mayor John Robert Smith as Scrooge; the Meridian Symphony Orchestra in a special holiday performance at the MSU Riley Center, "Many Moods of Christmas"; the Moscow Ballet's Great Russian Nutcracker.

Television personality Walt Grayson will be the Grand Marshal for the Meridian Christmas Parade. And country entertainers Mel and Pam Tillis will come to Meridian to present "A Tillis Family Christmas" at the MSU Riley Center.

Merry Meridian wraps up with the Singing Christmas Tree at Highland Baptist Church, where thousands have been known to show up to hear a choir of 75 voices from within a lighted Christmas Tree, joined by a full orchestra and a cast of actors.
