During the holidays, one of the most popular activities is catching a movie. And with many people concerned about finances and family obligations, theaters have been busy.

In fact, Monty Royal, owner of the Bonita Lakes Cinema, says many of the movies have come close to reaching full capacity.

Movies have long been a favorite pastime, but during times of economic stress, hours spent without concern or worry are priceless.

According to ABC News, historically this is true. In five of the last seven recessions, movie ticket sales have gone up. Royal said he believes this trend will continue.

"In today's modern cinema, with digital cinema, you can immerse yourself with the movie," said Royal. "And I can sit here for two hours and my wife isn't going to ask me to do something. If the phone rings, it isn't for me."

Each year highly anticipated movies come out during the holidays knowing people have more free time.
