Grammy-winning jazz singer Cassandra Wilson and best-selling author John Grisham are among the honorees receiving the 2009 Mississippi Governor's Awards for Excellence in the Arts.
A ceremony to present the awards was held Thursday at Galloway United Methodist Church, near the state Capitol in downtown Jackson.
Wilson is a Jackson native. Grisham is a former Mississippi lawmaker.
Also receiving the governor's award are painter Andrew Bucci, a Vicksburg native, for lifetime achievement; the University of Southern Mississippi Symphony Orchestra in Hattiesburg, for leadership in the arts; the WINGS Performing Arts Program of the Lynn Meadows Discovery Center in Gulfport, for arts in education; and Wolfe Studios in Jackson, for excellence in visual arts.
