The finals of a local talent competition will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the
MSU Riley Center.
Singers who captured the top spots in preliminary contests for "Afterschool Not Idle" will perform there for about 600 students.
It's part of a big rally to support "Lights On Afterschool 2006", endorsing after-school programs across Mississippi.
Peavey Electronics and the Mississippi Afterschool Alliance have joined hands on the project. WTOK-TV is a sponsor.
"I hope that the children get out of this a commitment to excellence, when they see these performers that are one of them. These children are all from the same background, the same group as the children who are coming to watch and they can see the excellence in these kids," said Peavey Electronics president, Mary Peavey. "And I hope that they can emulate that to some degree. And we want to challenge them to do that in the afterschool programs."
There will be celebrity judges on hand: the runner-up in American Idol 2005, Bo Bice; Meridian's own Hartley Peavey, and the former touring manager for Frank Zappa.
