Carl Fitzgerald, Remember When

A longtime Meridian radio man passed away last Thursday, following an extended illness.

Carl Fitzgerald, known for his work with The International Singing Brakeman Association he co-founded, passed away at the age of 81.

Fitzgerald also worked in radio in this city for the better part of six decades, much of that at 1010 WMOX, where he had most recently hosted a show called Remember When.

"He knew about the history of Meridian. He knew about the history of country music and all of the music that he enjoyed," said Ellie Massey of WMOX. "Everybody commented that he talked so fast. He had so much to say, that's why he had to talk so fast. He had so much to say, and we will all miss him so very much."

Fitzgerald also taught guitar to hundreds of students over the last fifty years.

Visitation will be Saturday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Robert Barham Family Funeral Home in Meridian. The funeral is Sunday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

I remember Carl from my childhood. He gave free guitar lessons one summer. I was one of his students, since then I have always loved to play. Thank you for that memory. God bless your family at this time. He was a kind and generous man.

Carl was an interesting man and very knowledgeable about music and history. I enjoyed talking to him. Yes, I had to ask him to slow down a time or two. Miss Thelma, may God comfort you in this difficult time. I know you brought Carl a lot of happiness and he was proud to have you as his wife.

Carl gave me my first award if you will when I got into television. It was for a story I did on the Shriners who helped a local high school football player paralyzed in a game. Ran into him plenty of times after that, he was quite a local institution, and will be missed!

Carl Fitzgerald was our Christian brother. Carl and his wife Thelma are members of our Sunday School class. Until he became ill and could not do so, Carl often entertained us at our class parties with his music and stories. We were always in awe by his knowledge of the music industry and entertainers. He will be missed by all, however, we can rejoice because he has 'gone home'! (by Bill & Pearline)
