A marker honoring the Annual Jimmie Rodgers Festival was placed at Dumont Plaza today, as part of of the Mississippi Country Music Trail. The marker remembers the first festival, held in 1953 in Meridian.
"The Country Music Trail Commission selected the site, and they felt like with the festival being one of the oldest festivals in the state, that naturally, it should be one of the first to be honored on the Country Music Trail," said Lauderdale County tourism director, Suzy Johnson.
The marker is Lauderdale County's third on the Country Music Trail. One honors Rodgers himself. Another honors Elsie McWilliams, who co-wrote many songs with Rodgers.
