Meridian, Miss. Due to rain, the Kids Spring Art Crawl has been rescheduled for Thursday, April 24, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Dumont Plaza in downtown Meridian.
The idea for the art crawl was started with a teacher from the county schools who wanted some way to display students artwork downtown. Meridian Main Street sponsors the free event as a way to involve kids into downtown Meridian.
"It gives people a chance to come downtown," said Emily McMillan of Meridian Main Street. "It gives children the opportunity to have their art displayed somewhere other than their school, so more people will have the opportunity to see it. It just brings the opportunity to involve the children in an event downtown."
Dumont Plaza will be the central location for the Kid's Art Crawl, but numerous businesses downtown will also be taking part in the event. Kids from kindergarten all the way through sixth grade will have a chance to display their artwork in businesses with the chance of winning a huge prize.
"Kids art from local area schools will be displayed in the businesses downtown and people will go downtown and view the art in the businesses," said McMillan. "There will be two $500 prizes awarded for the best art board."
The festivities will include an evening of fun for the kids from sidewalk chalk art, to a petting zoo, and even to a rock wall for kids to climb. The hope is not only that kids get to showcase their talents, but that it will continue to bring people back into downtown.
"We would like for people to see that downtown is alive and it's a good place to come. We want people to come downtown," said McMillan. "Maybe they'll come Tuesday night and see downtown and then they'll come back and have dinner somewhere, or they'll come and see an event at the Riley Center. And maybe they don't realize the possibilities that are downtown. "
The event will be Thursday, April 24th, at Dumont Plaza on the corner of 22nd Avenue and 5th Street.
