The auto burglaries all happened late last Friday night and early Saturday morning at residences just off Highway 145. Some of the crimes happened on Atwood and Mt. Olive Road. Vehicles that were parked off other county roads in the area were also affected. In all, seven vehicles were burglarized and an array of items were taken.
'Mainly it was things like cell phones, sunglasses and that kind of stuff,' says Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun with the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department. 'A purse was stolen. Credit cards were stolen. We've received some leads based off that credit card as well.'
Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun says other leads have come from witnesses.
'We did have some witnesses and we did have a Crimestoppers tipster that came forward, giving us some information that led us to a red vehicle that we were looking for.'
As of Wednesday afternoon Calhoun says at least one local man was being questioned in the case. However, others are thought to have also been involved.
'It appears that this individual from Tuscaloosa came over and they decided to go do some car burglaries. There's a possibility that there's a third individual involved. We're trying to identify that person as well. It was a female, we know that much and we know that she also is from the Tuscaloosa area.'
Calhoun says charges in the burglaries are expected to be filed soon.
