Civil Rights Conference

The National Conference on Civil Rights continued Monday at Pearl River Resort. The theme for this year's conference is 'Rise, Advocate, Educate and Cooperate: The Unfinished Business of the Civil Rights Movement.'

'If we don't learn how to communicate communicate and build relationships, we are destined to go right back into the early 40's and 50's when everybody was afraid of each other and afraid to communicate,' says Philadelphia Mayor James Young.

That's why conference sponsors from Philadelphia and Meridian say sparking more discussions about the past and reaching out to young future leaders are two goals for the gathering.

'This conference is about dialogue. It's not about hate or unforgiveness,' says Young.

'I think any time you are able to talk about the past and relate to it and what really happened in the 60's and early 70's and be able to accept it and move forward with greater goals and greater visions for your community, I think it's very helpful,' says Meridian Mayor Cheri Barry.

Young people from the Choctaw Tribe's Boys and Girls Club are attending some sessions this year.

'It is important to help them develop,' says the club's Dina Jimmie.

For year two of the conference, attendance is up by about 15% to 100 people registered. Among those are: educators, civil rights activists and civilians from as far away as the states of Washington, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.

'It's very, very important to know that color is a secondary thing. There were more Caucasians than there were people of color involved in the Civil Rights Movement,' says 1964 Freedom Rider, Fredrick Clark.

One of the featured guests is the man who many largely credit with the ultimate conviction of Edgar Ray Killen for the deaths of three civil rights workers in Philadelphia, almost 40 years after the murders happened.

'It's important that the truth be known. That's the thing that always drives me,' says investigative reporter Jerry Mitchell with the Clarion Ledger newspaper. 'Of course we know that there are still two suspects in the case who are alive, walking around. So, it bears continuing to write about.'

Next year's National Conference on Civil Rights will be held in Meridian. The goal is to attract at least 300 attendees.

The theme for next year's conference will center around the 'The Voices of Heroic Women and Men in the Civil Rights Movement.'

Papers, panels and artistic productions are being solicited for the conference. For more information click on the Civil Rights Conference link provided below.

Remberance of History is essential to understand the root of political/cultural configurations as they are now. Still the problems that are affecting all the Minorities are their poor, foolish individual choices; NOT the entire European-American/White race. I AGREE with Robert G. 'Institutionalized Discrimination' NO LONGER EXISTS! The Choctaws attending this conference know that they could go to university ALMOST FREE-the Federal gov. gave them a genrous compensation package-YET they refuse to better themselves and rather live on welfare, remain alcoholics for life!

HOW DARE YOU belittle a group of people that have suffered through the years as Native Americans have. Can't You understand attitudes such as yours and so may others that use your same generalizations are the the proof that Institutionalized Discrimination and racism is alive and kicking.

YOU haven't given me anything. What I have accomplished in my life is what I have earned. What my father, who lived to be 100 years old, accomplished is what he earned in spite of roadblocks. Your biases are showing through. Such general assumptions about an entire class of people. You know jack of what you speak. You haven't a clue what any minorities may think. My "assumptions" are based on the words you type. You haven't experienced discrimination, so how can you even begin to talk about it. Hopefully people of your mindset are a dying breed.

You beat me to it Mr G, i was going to use affirmitive action and run with it. well said again. But the people that are in favor of such things have the attitude that everyone owes them somthing for nothing, and that white people are trying to keep them down. If they would just come to realize that if the study in school, and take a little responsability, instead of livin like gangsters and living by the code of rap music, and see who can wear there britches the lowest, they might make it somewhere. Lord knows they have just as much opertunity as everyone else if not more because of all the entitlement programs out there that you have to be black to get.

I appreciate your support 'bearhunter' and commend you for having the courage to speak the painful truth;despite that we both are going to be labeld racist by the ACTUAL racists and black hate mongers or traitorous confusion makers, who themselves are delirous ABOUT what is really GOING On- on ALL levels....

As long as certin groups of people are on the outside always looking in, and living on hand outs, there will always be issues. wake up!! Get a job, pay your bills honestly, show some respect for yourself and others, find some morals, stop blaming someone else for your troubles, and quit thinking everyone owes you somthing. I guess I will be considered a racist again for calling it like it is. But that has little meaning any more because it is the only thing that those who disagree can do when they are told the truth. political correctness clouds the truth. a weight challenged person is still fat right? but when you say weight challenged it sounds like no fault of their own and its suger coated and easy to swallow. with the exception of a medical condition, but fat is fat, and everyone has a condition. maybe all the minoritys that the civil rights groups are supposably fighting for have a condition, i will ponder on this.

Once again through your comments you show how ms-guided and shallow-minded you truly are. You are the very one who needs to get and show some morals. People like you are fond of using the term "political correctness", yet I doubt you even know what it truly means

HOW IRONIC! The race of people who ARE being dehumaninzed and villified by CURRENT gov. officals, such as: Eric Holder and Barack Hussein Obama, are the European Americans! a.k.a White People. What is DONE is DONE! Yes! It was BRUTAL and HELLISH what Blacks went through in the past, BUT this is the PRESENT! And right now White People are being threatened and victmized by the New Black Panthers and the HORDE of Mexicans who are VOWING to TAKEOVER AZ, TX, NM and southern CA, AND demanding to be made United States Citizens becasue they ONLY want access to our OVERLY GENEROUS welfare system that is almost BANKRUPT! THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE REFUSES TO PROSECUTE THE BLACK PANTHERS OR THE ILLEGAL MEXICANS BECASUE THE TRUE VICTIMS OD THESE CRIMES ARE WHITE FAMILIES AND INDIVIDUALS! THIS IS UNJUST AND SICK! SPEAK UP SOMEBODY!!!!!!!!!

What in the name of decency has been taken from you or any other white person or families by the people you just named? Fall on your knees and pray and ask the Lord for needed wisdom

Please. Get over yourself. And spare me the faux contempt. Whats been taken away you ask? For one: employmnet opportunites; 'Affirmitive Action' has denied numersous White- more qualified- applicants becasue companies have to have their 'token' Black employees- who are LESS qualified in many cases! MAKE NO MISTAKE 'AFFIRMITIVE ACTION' IS LIVING RACISM DIRECTED SQUARELY AT EUROPEAN-AMERICANS! IT IS A CRIME IN THE HIGHEST MORAL ORDER AND SHOULD BE SHUT DOWN! TWO WRONGS DONT MAKE IT RIGHT!

NO you need to get over YOURSELF. You are repeating the same old tired lie about affirmative action. The people that have benefited from affirmative action are people that are as qualified as anyone for those positions.Colin Powell and Condi Rice are two well-known examples. I bet your complaint is about your perceived lack of WHITE PRIVILEGE

Tsk,tsk, tsk. My dear 'BAMN' you are making prejudiced ASSUMPTIONS!-(lol, 'White Privilege'-indeed!) In the 1960s Affirmative Action was 'born' and during those times and onward IT WAS A NECESSARY-implementation to ensure employment opportunity. Fast Forward- we are in the 21st century and 'Institutionalized Discrimination' is practically NONEXISTANT, therefore Affirmative Action is no longer necessary! IT-Affrimative Action- is living discrimination against White males in particular. TODAY African AMericans greatly occupy postions in All professional domains! The so called minorities that are doing poorly- are so because they CHOOSE to be! They would rather be criminals and receive 'something for nothing' White society has nothing to do with the poor INDIVIDUAL choices that 'Minorities' make. We have given you ALL more than enough compensation and assistance.
