Kemper Man Charged with Aggravated Assault

Kemper County, Miss. A Kemper County woman remains hospitalized after being shot by her father-in-law. It happened Wednesday night at the suspect's house. According to investigators, alcohol could have been involved.

When we arrived at 164 Otho Roberts Road Thursday morning things were quiet. That's quite a contrast from what happened at the house the night prior. It was around 7:30 Wednesday night when the owner of the home shot his daughter-in-law while in the kitchen.

"The gunshot was to her head, next to her temple," says Kemper County Sheriff James Moore.

That one gunshot wound resulted in 29-year-old Patrice Draper being airlifted to a hospital in Jackson for treatment. When the shooting occurred Sheriff Moore says the woman's two preschool age children were also inside the house. He says the shooting resulted from a disagreement.

"The shooter was J.C. Roberts," says Moore. "Talking to him initially he said that nobody was going to rule him in his house. We do know that the subject was highly intoxicated when this happened."

The victim and the accused both lived in the same mobile home. According to the sheriff, the victim and her husband moved into the house to help take care of J.C. Roberts, who was shot in an unrelated incident two years ago.

"It was a drug deal that went bad," says Moore. "They were actually looking for another person; encountered Mr. Roberts; he was trying to protect his home and got shot at that time."

At this time Sheriff Moore is not revealing exactly what type gun was used. However, he says the weapon was recovered from the scene, and that the 59-year-old suspect was also peacefully taken into custody there. In light of the incident, Sheriff Moore is making a plea to the public to think before taking any action.

"When you start mixing alcohol and drugs into a situation the outcome will not be good."

At last check, Patrice Draper remained hospitalized in stable, but critical condition in Jackson. As for the suspect, J.C. Roberts is currently facing a charge for aggravated assault. Bond for him is expected to be set sometime Thursday.
