Many in the state of Mississippi credit an investigative journalist with charges being brought against Edgar Ray Killen in the deaths of three civil rights workers.
Jerry Mitchell with the Jackson Clarion-Ledger has been reporting on the case since the late 1980s. In fact, Mitchell attended a civil rights conference in Philadelphia last month. But Mitchell says the Philadelphia Coalition and Carolyn Goodman deserve a lot of the credit.
"There's so much yet to be learned about in this case,' says Mitchell. 'Of course we know that there are two suspects in the case that are still alive, still walking around. So, it bears continuing to write about."
Mitchell says he has the entire 40,000 page FBI file in the case. He says a majority of that file has never been seen by the public.
