Kemper Search Concerns

Wesley Roebuck of Preston took his concerns about the Kemper County Sheriff's Department to the board of supervisors Monday.

'The sheriff's not telling the truth.'

The 81-year-old, retired Marine contends that Sheriff James Moore is not telling the truth about what happened after deputies raided his property last Thursday night.

'He won't answer the phone. I've called him 5 or 6 times,' says Roebuck.

'That's not true. We talked on Friday,' says Sheriff James Moore. 'I explained the situation to him and I haven't heard back from him.'

Around midnight last Thursday Roebuck says his property was surrounded by spotlights. He says the large bright lights even surrounded the pond in his backyard. According to Roebuck, he discovered an officer armed with a high powered spotlight and a pistol standing outside the door which leads to his bedroom.

'He was shining a light in and beating the door like he was going to knock the door in,' says Roebuck.

'We had some individuals stealing equipment in that area,' says Sheriff Moore. 'Some subjects were caught. Two of them ran and went in the direction of his house. Officers went to his house. Two to three officers knocked on the door. He asked them what was going on and they told him and they asked permission to look around the property, also for his safety. He agreed.'

'I told them you can search if you want to. If you want to you can look around the property and he said we're going to search it whether you like it or not. I think it's illegal for the sheriff's department to search without a search warrant,' says Roebuck.

In response, supervisors tabled the request.

'The sheriff is the leading law enforcement officer in this county and in my opinion you and the sheriff need to get together and work this one out,' says Kemper County Board of Supervisors President, Johnny Whitsett.

'I'm going to pursue it further,' says Roebuck.

In response to Roebuck's request, the Kemper County Board of Supervisors agreed to take the matter under advisement and discuss it further at a later date.
