MCC Job Fair

Meridian, Miss. Meridian Community College hosted one of its largest spring job fairs ever Wednesday. A total of 36 companies with jobs openings in everything from health-care and industry to law enforcement and food services took part in the fair. Representatives from as far away as the Montgomery Police Department in Alabama took part.

"We have an expansion project going on," says Virgie Lindsey from ESCO Corporation in Newton. "It's going to be finished probably this fall, and after that's done we're going to have probably about 60 to 70 positions open."

Participants in the job fair say they are looking to hire. In fact, representatives from Nissan in Canton attended the fair in hopes of filling 25 positions. Most of those jobs are for people who have training in electronics or industrial maintenance. Meanwhile, the consensus among all of the employers at the job fair was that they need people who are willing to work!

"It's really key to get them at that crew member level to be fry cooks and cashiers and they can soon work their way up," says Hank Holcomb, who is the general manager for Raising Canes restaurant in Meridian.

Meanwhile, Quantina Peters, who is a Human Resource Representative for the call center, Asurion says, "One of the things that we look for is voice; voice is everything with this department."

According to representatives from the company AVON, flexibility with work schedules is a growing concern among job seekers.

"You can sell AVON part-time or full-time," says Betty King. "Within the last four or five years we've had more people showing interest."

Wednesday's job fair was sponsored by MCC's Career Development Center. Year round it helps students and people within the community research job opportunities.

"We also have people that are available to sit down and help you do a resume, or maybe even polish up a resume that maybe you have done on your own. We do serve the community and our students on campus," says MCC Job Placement Coordinator, Shannon Coleman.

All services provided by the center are free. To contact someone from MCC's Career Development Center call (601) 481-1327.
