Some residents in west Alabama are being warned about a scam. The alert is from the Demopolis Police Department. Chief Tommie Reese says several residents have received phone calls stating that they've won a contest. To claim the prize they're told that they must put money on a money card, which they purchase from certain stores. Chief Reese says this is a scam. He's advising individuals who receive this type call to contact their local authorities. A similar scam has been reported in Meridian, using the Publishers Clearing House name. Remember, prizes are taxable, but free. You have to pay taxes to the government on certain prizes, but not before you receive them. Someone asking for money up front or for your personal and account information should be a signal that a scam is being attempted.
