Merchant Says Serial Con Artist at Work

Lauderdale County, Miss. Local merchants are being warned about a man who is being called a serial con artist. His most recent strike happened this week in Toomsuba. It occurred at 6 PM Monday at the Shell Convenience Store. At that time the suspect got away with almost $50.

"I'd love to catch him," says store owner, David Haggard. Over the last five years he says his store has been bilked of hundreds of dollars by the same man.

"We generally see this guy during the holidays. We see him one to two times a year, and he's back. This guy's whole ploy is interruption, confusion, and trying to get the big bill back with a big amount of change by saying, 'Hey, wait a minute. I had the $2; I need my big bill back."

According to Haggard, the two men who were behind the suspect in line Monday were working with him.

Surveillance video from the store shows that all three left in the same vehicle.

"This man has a a full team; everybody's got a role. They park on the side of the building. They put pressure on the cashier by standing in line and making it look like there's a huge crowd," says Haggard. "This man is 65 or 70-years-old. He's been doing this a long, long time and we'd love to catch him!"

Thought to be from the Jackson area, the suspect has a distinct light gray beard. Over the years he's accused of swindling thousands of dollars from stores all the way from Jackson to Tuscaloosa.

'He's targeting every station! Anybody who'll fall for it, he'll do it!'

Anyone with information on the suspect that could lead to an arrest is asked to contact your local authorities.

In the past the suspect is said to have driven a white Cadillac. However, Monday he was in what appeared to be a dark gray, four-door Mazda Tribute.

Anyone with information on the suspect may call Lauderdale County's Crimestoppers line at 601-485-1860.
