"Our main goal is to patrol state and federal highways to prevent accidents and to save lives," said newly promoted Capt. Billy Mayes of the Mississippi Highway Patrol, Troop H.
Mayes has been in his new position for only a week. He is a 23-year MHP veteran, serving all of that time in the Meridian district.
Mayes said his top priority will be reducing the number of deaths on Mississippi highways, a task he admits will be challenging with six of his troopers currently activated for military duty.
"We've just got to do more with less," said Mayes.
Mayes was promoted to commander after former commander Capt. Jon Howard was transferred to Hattiesburg.
The Meridian district is made up of nine counties: Lauderdale, Kemper, Clarke, Neshoba, Newton, Jasper, Leake, Scott and Smith.
