Tuesday night the district will sponsor its first safety committee meeting for this year. Local law enforcement officers and elected officials are expected to be on hand for the meeting. Organizers say this is part of a national school safety initiative.

"It's been reported that a number of those schools are now becoming drug free, violence free and it's because the communities are somewhat taking ownership for the schools and helping administrators. We can't do it all ourselves. We're going to need help from the community," said Dr. Sam Thompson, MPS Safety Director.

Tuesday night's meeting will be held at 7 o'clock at the district's Safety Center on the campus of Harris Elementary. It's free of charge and expected to last about an hour. The public is invited.

After Tuesday, Thompson says the group will meet once a month.
