The Meridian City Council has approved next year's contract with Lauderdale County for housing city prisoners in the county jail.
City councilman Dr. George Thomas objected, saying city residents are being charged twice.
"We're paying county taxes just like the people that live outside. Now we're expected to pay an extra fee for using the county jail which is our county jail," said Thomas.
"We agree with your position 100 percent. We've articulated that position to the state over and over and over again," said Mayor John Robert Smith of Meridian.
Meridian will pay the county $20.00 per day per inmate for housing prisoners. That's the same amount as is currently paid.
