The Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors has granted a request to significantly lower the tax appraisal of the Super Wal-Mart property for tax year 2001.
Several weeks ago, Andrew Mattiace, told supervisors the appraisal was too high. The board Monday approved the request 4-1.
"To go back now and assess the value as it is now is a whole different ball game," said board president Craig Hitt of District 3, who opposed the change.
"I feel like we need to be developer-friendly in this area," said District 1's Hank Florey, who voted to lower the appraisal. "These are outside dollars being fused into our local economy and we need more of it."
The board action reduced Mattiace's county, city and school taxes by $143,000.
